When designing or upgrading an MBBR system, one question often comes up:
Should we add more media—or choose better media?
At first glance, adding more media seems like the easiest way to increase biological capacity. More carriers mean more space for biofilm growth, right?
Not necessarily.
In MBBR applications, the quality and performance of the media can be just as important as the filling volume.
A high-quality MBBR carrier should provide more than a large surface area on a datasheet. It should offer:
• Effective protected surface area for stable biofilm growth
• Suitable geometry to support good mass transfer and oxygen penetration
• Stable movement inside the reactor without excessive dead zones
• Good resistance to clogging and biofilm sloughing
• Consistent density and dimensions for predictable reactor operation
• Long service life under continuous biological and mechanical conditions
Simply increasing the media filling ratio may not always improve treatment efficiency. If the carrier has poor hydrodynamics, insufficient protected surface, or inconsistent quality, additional media can mean higher investment without proportional improvement in performance.
On the other hand, selecting a well-designed carrier can help the existing reactor volume work more efficiently.
This is why we believe MBBR media selection should not be based on “How many cubic meters of media do I need?” alone.
A better question is:
“How much reliable biological capacity can this media provide under my actual operating conditions?”
Different wastewater characteristics, reactor configurations, aeration rates, filling ratios, and treatment targets can require different carrier designs.
At Small Boss, we manufacture MBBR media and also have our own laboratory and engineering team to support product selection and application evaluation.
Because sometimes, better media is not about adding more plastic—it is about making every cubic meter of reactor work harder.
What is your experience?
When optimizing an MBBR system, do you focus more on media quantity, media performance, or the balance between both?
