The higher the surface area, the better the media seems to be.
But is that really true?
Not necessarily.
The biggest mistake is choosing MBBR media based on surface area alone.
Here’s why.
🔹 Surface area isn't everything. Protected surface area and biofilm development are also important for biological treatment.
🔹 Media movement matters. Even high-surface-area carriers may underperform if mixing and aeration are insufficient.
🔹 Every project is different. COD/BOD removal, nitrification, organic loading, reactor design, and filling ratio all influence media selection.
🔹 Durability counts. Material quality and structural strength affect long-term performance and replacement costs.
So, before choosing a carrier, ask yourself:
Does it suit the wastewater characteristics?
Can it move effectively in the reactor?
Will it meet the treatment target under actual operating conditions?
The best MBBR media isn't necessarily the one with the highest surface area or the lowest price. It's the one that fits your application.
At Small Boss, we believe good media selection starts with understanding the project—not just comparing datasheets.
